The ski resort of Whakapapa has New Zealand’s most unique gondola experience: a 1.8-kilometre ride through one of the North Island’s most rugged landscapes with floor-to-ceiling views of the volcanic landscape outside.
As the name implies, the Sky Waka Gondola (waka means boat in Māori) cruises through the air, delivering its passengers to the country’s highest cafe, Knoll Ridge Chalet, located over two kilometres above sea level. From there you can look out across New Zealand’s oldest national park – Tongariro – to the Pinnacles mountain range, tracking the evolution of the region through the old lava flows on display. Don’t think of taking the return journey back before eating at the chalet’s award-winning restaurant.
