Books have the power to transport us, and sometimes, the libraries that house them are just as magical as the stories they hold. And if you’re a true bookworm, you might find yourself planning your holidays around the world’s most beautiful libraries, rather than the most picturesque beaches or Michelin-starred restaurants. But which are the most aesthetic?
1000 Libraries took to their book-loving community to reveal where the most breathtaking libraries in the world are, and they’re just as whimsical as you’d hope.

An impressive 200,000 votes from the 1000 Libraries community were recorded over 60 days, and a mix of libraries from Brazil to Ireland made the list.
Taking the top spot is The Library of Trinity College Dublin. Founded in 1592, it’s Ireland’s oldest library, often likened to the Hogwarts library from Harry Potter. The most famous section is the Long Room, a 65-metre stretch of dark oak bookcases filled with 200,000 of the library’s oldest and rarest books.

Taking second place is the State Library of South Australia, established in 1836. Renowned for its stunning Victorian architecture, the Aussie library is especially admired for the Mortlock Wing, which features soaring balconies, intricate wrought-iron railings, and beautifully detailed woodwork.

Third on the list is the ornately decorated Abbey Library of St. Gallen in Switzerland. As part of the Abbey of St. Gall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its origins trace back to the 8th century, making it one of the oldest libraries in the world. The main library hall is a masterpiece of late Baroque architecture and Rococo art, featuring intricate frescoes and stucco decorations.
