Cycle the Tour de France

Ranked #63 in our countdown of ‘100 Ultimate Travel Experiences of a Lifetime’.

The Tour is as famous for the scenery it passes through as it is for the bad behaviour of its riders over the years.

An endless cycle (pardon the pun) of distractingly pretty cities and towns (Nancy in the Lorraine region was an IT favourite from this year’s race), deep fields of golden sunflowers, historic architecture and soaring mountains, following the race in the saddle, albeit at a much more leisurely pace than the peloton, represents a perfectly balanced French experience – one where you can stop at all the bistro and boulangerie your heart (and stomach) desires along the way, and then work it all off again with pedal power.

The world’s most enticing cycling destination. Laced with bike paths, wineries and boulangeries, it really is the travel dream – even if only as an excuse to eat your body weight in pain au chocolat.
