We asked the folks at Jaipur’s stately Rambagh Palace hotel to give us their insiders’ tips to living like a royal in this most regal of Indian cities.
- Relax with a drink of rare whisky or cognac at the Polo Bar, which is resplendent with the late Mahārāja’s polo trophies.
- Visit Baradari restaurant at the City Palace, the palace room that overlooks the grand fountain in the gardens.
The palace façade gives a hint of the opulence that the Mahārāja would once have lived in.
- Drive around the city to see its architectural marvels and majestic gardens in one of the hotel’s vintage cars; the fleet includes a pristine 1937 Chrysler.
- Play croquet over afternoon tea; the game was introduced at the palace by the late Rajmata Gayatri Devi, who used to play it in England.
Guests are kitted out with the necessary gear for a game on the lower front lawns and served afternoon tea.
