Cruising comes in many forms, from first-time, saw-it-on-special, quick whip off to Fiji and back, right through to the ultimate, once-in-a-lifetime journeys that bring back all the romance of travelling the world. The latter are the kind of epic voyages that combine slow travel, watching the horizon stretch before you, with the modern ease of having destinations seemingly come to you as you relax in luxury and style.

It’s this style of cruising that Silversea has mastered. On what is already a renowned full-service (and then some) six-star cruise line, the best of the best is set to take place from 2 February, 2019: the Asia Pacific Grand Voyage, the itinerary of which takes in 39 ports and includes 13 overnights, journeying from Sydney all the way up to Tokyo over 73 days, arriving just in time for Japan’s famous cherry blossom season.

The ultimate muse

This is all aboard the line’s newest flagship Silver Muse, launched only last year to redefine what luxury cruising is all about. The so-called ‘ultra-luxury’ liner caters to a mere 596 guests, served by a crew of 411, making up one of the best crew-to-guest ratios in the cruising industry. Its all-Ocean-view veranda suites enjoy full butler service, an in-suite bar plus laundry and luggage services. Vessel-wide, unlimited wi-fi is a natural inclusion, but the inclusive experience of a full Grand Voyage also covers US$2500 of onboard spending credit per suite, an exclusive shoreside event as well as a complimentary Silversea Experience, excellent ship-wide drinks service including Champagne, wines and spirits, onboard gratuities, full visa service and a glorious three-day post-cruise package at the rather fabulous The Peninsula Hotel in Tokyo, so you can continue to explore in the kind of comfort that you’ve become accustomed to.

So, where is it going to take me?

The highly immersive itinerary features overnights in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Fremantle, Bali (Benoa), Singapore, Bangkok (Laem Chabang), Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Osaka, but there is so much more to this journey. Voyagers will strike east toward New Zealand, almost circumnavigating the two islands and seeing such famed sights as the dramatic Milford and Doubtful Sounds, before heading back west and hugging Australia’s south coast to enjoy the best of South and Western Australia, like Kangaroo Island and Albany. After a last stop in Fremantle, it’s northwards to Bali and Lombok, before crossing the equator to Malaysia, the Philippines and the aquamarine waters of Palawan Island. The exotic town of Kota Kinabalu in Malaysian Borneo is next, then the famous port of Singapore – a thriving hub of culture that you can take the time to explore with an overnight stay there.

Then it’s on to the much loved holiday haven of Koh Samui in the southern waters of Thailand before heading north to the excitement of Bangkok. A double overnight in bustling Ho Chi Minh City is followed by the endless beach and beauty of Da Nang. You’ll then set sail and spend a night in the stunning neon-lit harbour of Hong Kong. The final segment of the journey is steeped in extraordinary Asian glamour, including an overnight in the chic city of Shanghai, an adventure among the pearl divers and natural wonders of South Korea’s Jeju Island, and finally making landfall in Japan in the fascinating city of Hiroshima, a place that seamlessly combines its fascinating history with a wonderful, modern culture. The shopping and foodie paradise of Osaka awaits, before it’s on to the final destination: Tokyo – the culmination of a truly epic swathe across the world’s oceans, from massive fjords to a megalopolis.

Throughout the itinerary, the Silversea crew has planned an extraordinary succession of exclusive events, local experiences and enriching programs in partnership with the prestigious Peninsula Group. These involve a host of characters from historians to chefs, locals and experts, to help you make the very most of this once-in-a-lifetime odyssey. If you’re going to do it, do it in grand style, we say.
