36. Drive round New Zealand’s South Island

Ranked #36 in our countdown of ‘100 Ultimate Travel Experiences of a Lifetime’.

New Zealand’s South Island ticks all the boxes: OMG scenery, adventure pursuits to leave you hoarse from screaming, luxury lodges and lungs-full of fresh air.

Start your drive in Christchurch to see the urban renewal after the 2011 earthquake; head down to Central Otago and cycle the vineyards; across to Queenstown for an adrenalin fix; then a spot of world-class skiing at Mount Cook to finish you off.

There’s nowhere prettier on Earth… seriously. Quirky people in cute villages living in the most striking landscape on the planet.

Many people believe Nelson has the best climate in New Zealand, as it regularly tops the national statistics for sunshine hours, with an annual average total of over 2400 hours.the long autumns here permit the production of fine late-harvest wines.
